Every month, around 5,000 Eritreans flee their country. Half of them arrive in refugee camps in the Tigray and Afar regions of Ethiopia. Since 2015, MEDSF has provided health services in the area, with a focus on mental health and psychiatric care, to the population of Hitsats and Shimelba refugee camps, as well as to the host community.

In 2016, who still counts as human?

"Through this deal, EU leaders have made a choice that should raise serious questions for the citizens of affluent Europe. In 2016 who still counts as human? Whose lives matter? What happened to empathy? And where has solidarity gone when faced with the anguish and despair of those whose lives have been shattered?"

Due to the lack of safe and legal alternatives for people to flee and seek protection, the deadly stretch of water between Libya and Italy, which in 2015 claimed the lives of 2,892 men, women and children, is now almost the only way for thousands to reach European shores, and it is already as busy as ever.

Three Mediterranean boat migrants describe their gruelling quests for better lives

"We go away from our country because we have no choice. We don’t want to get the Europeans tired of us, to overwhelm them, but we have no choice. We risk our lives to help our families, or neighbours, our friends, our parents and our brothers. That’s why we embark on this journey."
